Goal

We seek to stop the planned fee increase for non-subsidized student families. We plan to act on the two separate plains: out highest priority is to hold back the change for families currently in the program, while raising campus-wide and public awareness to the situation and its implications on the lives of these families; in parallel, we pursue longer-term solutions to bring sustainable and affordable childcare to the whole community of UC Berkeley student families.

Action Items

  • Meet relevant officials, in particular Laura Kealy-Seldana (ECEP director)
    • Goal #1: Get more time by freezing the increase for families in the program
    • Goal #2: See how existing and immediately allocatable funds can be used to sponsor non-subsidized continuing families
    • General: Demand full disclosure, including access to budget and available funds
    • Possible dates: Fri 4/18, either 9-10 or 11-12; scheduling/agenda responsibility: Gilad, (others?)
  • Present our case in the upcoming CACDC meeting with Steve Lustig on May 8
    • organize a small team of representatives; prepare a briefing for the meeting
    • scheduling/agenda responsibility: Joanna, Gilad, (others?)
  • Get the graduate student association / union involved; possibly through ISAC
    • Possible contact through Josh Daniels; to be checked by Sarah
    • Possible contact through ISAC (Ahmed Antebly, Yasmeen Daifallah); to be checked by Gilad, Yael
  • Get academic advisers / chairs to communicate the problem
    • possible solution: release discretionary funds for sponsoring student parents (more than what is already being provided by departments); is there a way to regulate this?
    • assignment for academic departments: EECS (Gilad); (others?)

Long-Term Solutions

  • Goal: fill the void between state subsidy eligibility and market-rate childcare cost; make UC childcare affordable to all student families based on a fair and sustainable budget policy.
  • Proposed policy: sliding fee scale for non-subsidized student families; how to do that?

Recognition / Other

  • Media connection; currently run in the background but prepare for loud protest
    • briefing responsibility: Frank, Yael
  • Is this situation legally actionable, e.g. as in being against good faith, etc?
    • to be checked by Yael, Frank
